Deck Log (PDF)
To maintain a permanent record of the cruise, the most important pieces of navigational information should be entered in the log. This need not be a complicated document, but times, courses steered, bearings, fixes, ETAs, etc. should be entered in it.
Trip Plan (PDF)
If a planned cruise is expected to last overnight, or to cover a long distance, it is wise to file a trip plan with some responsible contact person. The plan should include the details required to initiate a call for search and rescue, if that should become necessary. The contact person should also be familiar with these emergency procedures. During the trip, keep the plan updated, and the contact informed, to avoid an unnecessary call for search and rescue.
